The chests are complete!
I just wanted to share with everyone the new chests the team made.
Firstly, Trippy designed, modeled, textured, and animated the chests. They are a simple, stylised design, and the animations are a cartoony style to match the low-poly, stylised world we have created.
Afterwards, Roby brought them further to life with his scripting magic—creating whole functions for the gold coins and scripting a gold coin explosion effect for players to enjoy.
Once the chest has been opened and the gold coins collected, the chest will fade out and despawn within 15 seconds.
Bringing Chests to Life: The Creative Process Behind the Magic
As mentioned above, this is Trippy’s first time making a chest in Roblox Studio, but you wouldn’t be able to tell due to how much of a perfectionist she is. When she works on a task, she puts so much effort into making sure it looks great and well-polished. Even the animations she’s made function so smoothly, and the end result turned out amazing. The way the texture matches the stylized style and the cartoony animations all fit perfectly, and it’s exciting to see her develop her skills further as she becomes more confident in her skill set.
With Trippy’s part done, the pressure was on Roby to deliver something awesome, and he did not disappoint. In no time, Roby had scripted the chests to spawn randomly across our entire map, which we look forward to surprising unknowing players with as they explore, with a little gift of coins which will fire out of the chest once opened. I’m proud of what the team came up with and how everything is fitting together so well. I can’t wait to begin opening the game up to testers so we can refine everything further and bring everyone the best player experience once the game’s released.
How the Chests Work: Unlocking Treasure Underwater
Interacting with the chests is simple and engaging. When you first encounter a chest, you will first notice a golden glow and a subtle gleaming sound. Once you swim up to the chest, you will see a letter “E” pop up, indicating to press and hold “E,” which will begin a dial that will count down. Once the dial is filled, it will burst the chest open as if you just unlocked the chest, and coins will shoot out everywhere. Swim up to the coins, and they will gravitate towards you before flying towards your fish and disappearing. A sound of gold falling into your bank will play, and at the top of your screen, your gold will increase to how much gold you just collected. I hope everyone enjoys exploring the map and searching for the gold chests to increase their gold, and that it gives you all a reason to go out there and see what’s lurking in the big open ocean.
Once the gold has been collected from the chest, the golden glow will begin to fade while the chest remains open and emptied. After a while, the chest will begin to fade away. We have done this so players know to investigate only glowing chests. We wanted to make this feel as rewarding as possible, in the hopes it immerses every player further.
